Richard Rice Architects
RICHARD RICE ARCHITECTS, founded in 1982, provides a high level of personal service to a wide range of business and institutional clients, including prestigious universities, private clubs and not-for-profit organizations.

In arriving at effective design solutions, RRA is particularly adept at working with institutions and securing the necessary consensus among the many constituents that must be included in the decision-making process. Through interviews, space planning exercises, and focused research, we design ideal environments that meet the demanding needs and requirements of our institutional clients.

The firm prides itself in its attention to design details for both new building and renovation projects.  We find, especially in renovations, that potential problems can be turned into positive design features. This careful attention is reflected in the firm’s commitment to meeting the budgets of its clients. This emphasis comes from Mr. Rice’s own experience in business as well as from his training at Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA.

Richard Rice Architects’ design philosophy emphasizes classicism and detail – classicism meaning the adherence to timeless standards of simplicity, restraint and proportion that are universally and enduringly valid.

RRA’s client roster includes many prestigious institutions that have been continuing clients for many years.

Richard Rice founded Richard Rice Architects in 1982 after graduating from Harvard Business School. Prior to attending HBS, he was an employee of The Gruzen Partnership where he worked on numerous projects — located in the U.S. and abroad — and served as principal designer for several hotel projects: including Grand Hyatt Hotel, New York, NY and Radisson Plaza Hotel (since renamed Sheraton Raleigh Hotel), Raleigh, NC.

Mr. Rice has led the firm in the design of a wide variety of projects, primarily for institutional and business clients.  A representative sample of some recent projects are: athletic facilities, including squash courts and fitness centers for private clubs and schools; technology oriented educational facilities for prestigious universities; historical renovations for various clients; and major new facilities for well known not-for-profit organizations.  He is licensed as an architect in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and North Carolina, and holds certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
